My Top 10 Songs for Labor and Delivery and General Well-Being

Music has always been my go to source for helping me get through challenging events in life.  The past several months have been no exception and the labor and delivery of my son just last week was one of those events. For both of my deliveries I prepared a playlist that had music I felt would provide support to get me through. These songs have been so beneficial for me I decided to pick my top 10 and share them. Be encouraged!

10. Yearn by: Shane and Shane
This is an all time favorite song and it will never get old for me. It reminds me that my one desire is the presence of God above all else. This song ushers the presence of God into the space! The passionate vocal style fits the burning message of this song. "He brings us joy, life and breath, that's why I sing". They say the crowning of the head brings a burning feeling-you might think of having such a burning desire to know God and his burning desire to fellowship with us! If you are still able to think straight by that point lol. As for me, I was just focused on getting the little thing out of me so I could hold him😆

9. Stronger by: Hillsong
This is another long standing favorite song! For us moms who are preparing for birth it is so easy to second guess ourselves. We often don't see ourselves or our bodies as strong and this can be a hinderance as we prepare for labor and delivery. As believers we are promised that even in our weakness God is strong within us! The very Spirit of the living God lives in us! The power that raised Christ from the dead is the same power that is with us in the delivery room! This is the only strength we need! This is especially important to remember when we enter the transitioning stage in labor. This second time for me I really doubted that I could stay strong. I told my midwives that I needed support. I needed them to talk to me because the defeating and discouraging thoughts were grabbing hold in that moment. Even though my body was ready for what was coming my mind was growing weak. Our bodies are so much stronger than we know. The battle is over our minds! This song offers strength for the mind!

8. Waiting Here for You by: Christy Nockels
This song puts my mind on the One greater than all! The one who can move mountains. The One who moves when He wills. The One who's ways are perfect. It reminds me to always wait on Him, to surrender to His way and not let anxiety determine my behavior. This song invites me to rest in His presence and to desire His presence more than His deeds.

7. No Longer Slaves by: Bethel Music
This one was first introduced to me by a friend when I was preparing to deliver my first baby. I was planning to have a natural birth and studied some HypnoBirthing. The material talks about fear being a hinderance to natural birth. Our fears can surface with pregnancy and prevent us from being mentally prepared for birth. This song declares that we can be free from all fear because "God drowns our fears in perfect love". It declares our identity as children of God. This song is healing for any fears we face in life.

6. I Shall Not Want by: Audrey Assad
I cannot say enough about the powerful truth of these song lyrics! One of our greatest fears in preparing for birth is our fear of discomfort. This song hits that fear on the head with the first line. God never promises us comfort! In fact some of the greatest blessings cause us the most discomfort. When we can learn to embrace this instead of run from it we can overcome in the strength and power of Christ! This lesson is so good for us in all uncomfortable circumstances in life. I can never get sick of this song. In a culture that is constantly in a state of discontent this song is healing for the heart, mind and soul. You will find peace and contentment when you allow the Spirit of this song to sink deep into your soul.

5. Because of Your Love by: Chris Quilala
There were a handful of songs I added to my labor/delivery playlist as I was sitting in the bath with early labor contractions and this was one of them! I love the overall vibe of this one. It's somewhat trance like. It dwells on the amazing love of God. I feel as if I am spinning round and round with the love of God all around me. This is what I want my baby to feel. I want him to feel the amazing great love of God: in the womb, on his way out and now as he is living outside it. I want my home to be filled with the great love of God. I want my children to feel it constantly. This song invites the love of God into your space!

4. It is Well by: Bethel Music and Kristene DiMarco
This is a classic song for anyone going through a difficult season or grieving a loss. This song was first an old traditional hymn. A man wrote this chorus after losing his wife and daughters on a sunken ship that was headed to their family vacation spot while he stayed behind to finish up some things at the office. It is nothing short of a miracle that this man could experience a peace within his soul after such a tragic loss. It is only the power of the Holy Spirit that this could occur! Maybe you or someone you love has experienced a miscarriage and the fear of loss is strong. Maybe even after having your baby you suffer severe anxiety about the possibility of losing your child. I remember after having my first baby thinking, "I didn't know my heart could could feel so much love". This great love can at the same time bring us great fear of losing this precious being. This song reminds us that we don't need to fear even death! It calls us into a deeper level of surrender and trust that no matter what happens, "It is Well with My Soul" because of Jesus. One day He will make all things right, but for now He can make it well in our souls.

3. Not in a Hurry by: Will Reagan & United Pursuit
This is another song I purchased while in the bath the day my second son was born. First, Will has the most smooth, soulful voice that will put you in a trance before you can say "more warm bath water please!" This song reminds me to slow down, be mindful, don't try and rush things. Things will progress at just the right speed. It reminds me that I am not in control, but rather I am to respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit. I just can't get enough of this one!

2. Need You More-Will Reagan & United Pursuit
Anything by Will Reagan is just so good! This is a passionate cry for more of Him! "When I feel lost or when my faith is wavering-He gives us courage to carry on". This is the courage we need as mothers/parents in every season! Enough said, let this song move you into the magical presence of God.

My Top Number One Song: Simple Pursuit by: Passion

This is currently my new favorite song! It strips away all the distractions that so easily entangle us! All the activity and good things that keep us from truly entering into the presence of God. I have enjoyed playing this one over us as I care for my new baby. It helps me stay focused on what really matters. The new found love I find for my baby is a small taste of the love God has for us! No human love could ever come close to the fellowship and love we can have with God!

Be encouraged, be blessed and add these songs to your playlist!
