Steady like the sun, moon and stars.
One of the tasks on my list today was managing the budget. Today happens to be a day where there is not much in the bank account and I am looking forward to pay day. I have to be creative with what I do on my day off and I will have to be very creative with what I make for dinner since there is not much food in the kitchen. A budget is one of those things that seems to always change, one moment there is money in abundance and then the bills are paid and there isn't much left. There are a lot of things in life that seems to change, friends come and go, health comes and goes, jobs come and they go and the list goes on.
This morning my reading took me to Psalm 148.
"Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD from the heavens, praise him in the heights above. Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars. Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies. Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. He set them in place for ever and ever; he gave a decree that will never pass away. Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lighting and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth, young men and maidens, old men and children. Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens. He has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his saints, of Israel, the people close to his heart. Praise the LORD."
My focus in on verses 3-6. Jeremiah talks about this decree that David speaks of. Basically he says that as long as the sun, moon and stars are in place Gods people will remain. He speaks of the nation of Israel, but we know now that all those who have surrendered to Christ have been adopted into Gods family and have become children of Israel. WE are those who are close to the heart of God!
For the first time I thought about how when I look at the sun and the moon they are the very same sun and moon that were created in the very beginning of creation!!! Many others things have changed since creation, but the sun and moon have been as constant as God himself. Without any worry or care from humankind the sun comes up every morning and sets every evening. All of this happens like clockwork and we don't have to think about it! God relates his relationship with his people to the constance of the creation. If we could learn to trust in God's constant presence in our life, just like we never worry about the sun or the moon we would have much less anxiety. In the same way that we don't worry about the sun and moon, we don't have to worry about God's love, his mercy or his goodness just going away or no longer being available to us. God has promised that He will always be with us and will take care of us. So in the midst of the world's chaos and change let us hold onto the promise that God is ever-present and unchanging and He wants to draw us closer to His heart!
